So long as we accept it [that notion] without analysis there is [still] an element of obscurity in talking of "belief that p," a feeling of lurking difficulties which must not be shirked. And since truth depends on and is defined in terms of [propositional reference] this notion of "believing that," obscurity [and ignorance] with regard to propositional reference means obscurity with regard to truth.
