For communication to the MAC layer, the physical channels are combined into the so-called transport channels. In HSDPA-operated networks, only two transport channels are needed: (i) the High-Speed Downlink Shared CHannel (HS-DSCH), responsible for carrying the DL information (both data and control), and (ii) the Dedicated Channel (DCH), responsible for carrying the UL information (again, both UL and control). Finally, the logical channels are formed in the MAC to convey the information to the higher layers, headed by the RLC layer.
