Such experiments ushered in the “golden age” of comparative psychology, in which the behaviors of many animals-both invertebrate and vertebrate-were studied under field and laboratory conditions and various theories were advanced to account for them. Around the turn of the century, many techniques were developed to study learning. Some of the more memorable techniques of the period include E. L. Thorndike’s (191 1) puzzle box, in which he investigated the learning of various vertebrates such as chickens and cats, W.

Erwin Neher and Bert Sakmann shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing the patch clamp technique used to reveal the function of single ion channels. Hundreds of laboratories have used the patch clamp technique since its use on denervated frog muscle fibers in 1976. Prior to 1976, however, the patch clamp technique was used on the soma of neurons in the snail Helix pomatia (Neher & Lux, 1969). An account of the development and uses of the technique can be found in Neher and Sakmann ( 1992).

Those interested in the simple systems approach will find much material in Table A-1 and chapter 7. Of special interest are a number of Scientzfic American articles that nicely describe the use of invertebrates such as Drosophila (Benzer, 1973),Hermissendu (Alkon, 1983; 1989), Tritonia (Willows, 1971), Aplysiu (Kandel, 1970; Kennedy, 1967),and Hirudo (Nicholls & Van Essen, 1974) in the analysis of behavior. How to Choose a Particular Research Strategy For readers entering the study of invertebrate learning for the first time, the choice of which strategy to use in your own research can be daunting.
